Bacco Beach – two cafés, casuarina trees, and a popular spot for kitesurfers

This beach is located in the Na-Jomtien area which follows Jomtien to the south and administratively sits outside Pattaya city limits. Consequently the atmosphere here is much quieter and more rural.

A road stretching several hundred feet leads from Sukhumvit to Bacco Beach with virtually nothing along it except forest and marshland. It takes you to two restaurants which are the main highlights of the beach – the Italian restaurant Bacco Beach and Glass House restaurant with its glass pavilion in the centre of an open veranda.

Around them are several nice quiet hotels with green grounds. If you go onto the beach towards the Ambassador Hotel to the left you’ll find a long casuarina grove and a kite surfing spot beyond it. During the low tide season around March strong winds blow here which is exactly what kite surfers need.

Beach Overview

About 0.6 miles (one kilometre) long Bacco Beach looks like a good option for those who don’t fancy city noise and don’t need loads of beach activities. The beach also attracts long-term Pattaya residents – primarily to sit in one of the two beach restaurants or to lounge in peace and quiet on the sand under the casuarinas.

That said there aren’t many sunbeds with umbrellas for rent shops beach vendors or jet skis but it has to stand out somehow from Pattaya’s city beaches. There are several rather expensive hotels in the beach area.

They’re a bit off the beaten track from the centre of activity but on the other hand it’s not far to Sukhumvit from where it’s easy to get to any part of Pattaya either by your own transport or taxi as well as by route tuk-tuks.

The beach has both completely secluded spots and busier areas. There aren’t many outsiders here mostly restaurant visitors and hotel guests. From the Pattaya side the beach ends where a river flows into the sea and from the other end it’s also essentially bounded by a small river with a kitesurfing school on the bank beyond which through wasteland you can already see the Ambassador Hotel and its beach.

Swimming

During high tide the water entry is comfortable and quite steep. In season the water is what you might call clean. Off-season when the low tides begin (end of February – March) and strong winds with waves appear the water becomes murky yellow. During low tide swimming isn’t very convenient as it’s too shallow.

At the same time on the deserted end of the beach closest to the Ambassador kite surfers practice their skills with their parachutes periodically falling into the water with a loud bang. It’s better to keep a bit of distance from them and swim opposite the restaurants in the centre or at the opposite end of the beach.

Sunbeds and Shade

At Pinnacle Grand Jomtien Resort & Spa loungers under umbrellas are available for hotel guests and Glass House and Bacco Beach restaurants also have tables and loungers with umbrellas under the casuarinas. Further towards the Ambassador along the beach stretches a line of tall casuarinas. They provide shade almost all day but grow quite far from the water. Right on the beach near the sea there’s little shade.

Amenities

Apart from two good atmospheric restaurants Glass House and Bacco Beach there’s essentially nothing else on the beach. There are practically no sunbeds or loungers for rent no shops and no standard beach activities. There are one or two small shops near the Pinnacle Grand Jomtien Resort & Spa hotels.

But by and large there are neither entertainment options nor tourist infrastructure. At least for those who aren’t guests of the hotels and restaurants located on the beach. If you’ve come to sit in the two cafés mentioned above or you’re staying at a beachfront hotel then of course all amenities will be available.

As for tourist attractions near the beach there’s the Alangkarn theatre floating market elephant riding spot and a bit further towards Sattahip the Ambassador City Jomtien hotel near which on Sukhumvit there are many food and souvenir stalls 7-Eleven and Family Mart shops and even the large Mimosa entertainment complex with boutiques and ladyboy shows.

Between Bacco Beach and Ambassador Beach is KiteBoarding Asia KBA Pattaya – a kitesurfing school.

Accommodation

In the centre of the beach there are lovely hotels for a quiet and measured stay:

  • Pinnacle Grand Jomtien Resort & Spa
  • The Journey Resort

A bit further inland away from the beach are expensive villas:

  • View Talay Marina
  • Baan Calypso

Besides these there are several other hotels and condos for example

  • Sea Falcon Hotel
  • View Talay Seaside Condo

There are no rental houses right on the beach. Between the sea and Sukhumvit are a couple of villages with expensive villas. Affordable accommodation (rooms apartments and houses) can be found on Huay Yai Road but they’ll all be about 1.2 miles (2 km) from the beach.

How to find the beach

Administratively the beach is outside Pattaya city limits to the south of the centre closer to Sattahip. This is the Na-Jomtien area 6 miles (10 km) from Pattaya centre. To get to the beach you need to go south on Sukhumvit towards Nong Nooch Tropical Garden just past the floating market directly opposite the Alangkarn theatre which will be on your left Na-Jomtien 10th Street goes right.

If you’re coming from Pattaya centre you’ll need to make a U-turn first. The U-turn is 2000 feet (600 m) further along Sukhumvit. From the U-turn you can also get to the beach at its other end to the B2 Sea View Pattaya Boutique & Budget Hotel. At the turn onto 10th Street there are signs for Glass House which is a restaurant right on the beach. After turning off Sukhumvit the narrow straight road leads you directly to the sea in 2600 feet (800 m).

If you’re not using a taxi or private transport getting to the beach won’t be much more difficult. White route tuk-tuks run along Sukhumvit. However if you’re travelling from Pattaya centre you’ll either have to dash across the road (which isn’t recommended) or get off about 2300 feet (700 m) before the turn onto 10th Street and cross Sukhumvit via the overpass. Then walk along the road and 10th Street a total of about 3300 feet (one kilometre) to the beach.

Besides from Sukhumvit you can also reach the beach by walking along Ambassador Hotel beach – Bacco Beach is north of this hotel complex so you need to walk towards Pattaya about 1 mile (one and a half kilometres).

Ole G

I'm head over heels about travelling. I've been all over Thailand, both the south and the north. I've visited all the touristic cities, travelled there as a tourist for holidays and to escape the winter. I've been going there every year for 15 years now.
