Wong Amat Beach: The Premier Beach of North Pattaya

Wong Amat Beach is located in the north of Pattaya and is the longest beach in the Naklua area. Some people simply call it Naklua Beach. This area is much cleaner, quieter and greener than central Pattaya but it’s quite close by. If you fancy it you can easily reach all the shops and attractions in the centre.

The downside of Wong Amat Beach is that there’s not much natural shade and few loungers for rent. There’s a pedestrian path along the beach with expensive high-rise hotels facing it. These hotels put out nice comfortable loungers for their guests. At low tide the beach is quite wide with shallow water. At high tide it becomes a narrow strip of sand with deep water right away up to your waist which is often rough.

Beach Overview

The beach is about 0.9 miles (one and a half kilometres) long if you include the adjacent southern cape which separates Wong Amat from the beach in central Pattaya. The northern part of Wong Amat roughly from R-Con Wong Amat Suite 3 is unkempt and deserted.

It’s more like a strip of littered sand between the sea and hotel fences interspersed with rocky patches in the water. The central part of Wong Amat Beach is the cleanest and has some amenities. Near the Centara Pattaya Hotel 4 where the beach curve transitions into a cape with sandy spits and large boulders in the water there are several beach cafes and bars. Boats bob in the water nearby. There’s a small non-swimmable section with stones shells and dirt in the water.

Further towards central Pattaya there’s a cape with littered deserted areas stones and small strips of sand between them where you can swim. In the middle of the cape is the Cape Dara Resort 5.

The part of the beach adjacent to its territory is thoroughly cleaned but there are many sharp stones and shells in and around the water. The cape ends with the Dusit Thani Pattaya 5 hotel which separates the Naklua area from the central promenade.

The beach is about 65 feet (20 metres) wide on average but can be wider or narrower depending on the tide. Roughly in the centre of the beach under the trees along the footpath there’s a small market-like area with fruit tourist goods and offers of massage braiding etc. Vendors walk along the beach especially during high season when the beach becomes crowded sometimes almost packed.

There are many Russian tourists so much so that the nearby streets of Naklua have plenty of signs in Russian. There’s also an Orthodox church nearby – St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Swimming

The best place for swimming is the middle and southern part of the beach. In the centre the shore slopes steeply towards the water at high tide the entry into the water is sudden almost immediately waist-deep. At low tide it stays shallow below knee level for a long way out. Accordingly at high tide the beach is only a few metres wide between the water and the path while at low tide it’s a wide strip where you can sit and walk.

The water is slightly murky with a somewhat silty bottom more noticeable at low tide. The sand is yellow and fine. Lighter sand is on the spit between the large boulders. There are often waves especially on the cape. There are sharp rocks in the water there so enter and swim with caution.

The water across the entire beach isn’t completely clean and clear. You might find rubbish like plastic bags and the sea is somewhat murky. Still it’s one of the cleanest beaches in Pattaya.

Sunbeds and Shade

In the centre of the beach sunbeds are mainly from hotels you’ll need to search for ones to rent. The vegetation is also quite sparse and not continuous. There are trees but they provide little shade during the day. Morning and evening at sunset is the best time to visit. In the northern part of the beach there’s nothing – no shade no sunbeds no amenities.

At the southern edge on the cape where the rocks are there’s both vegetation and sunbeds with umbrellas for rent. It’s a good place to shelter from the scorching southern sun.

Near the Centara Pattaya Hotel 4 the beach curve ends with a cape scattered with stones and large boulders in the water. There are trees along the beach providing natural shade and you can rent loungers and deck chairs under umbrellas. This part of the beach is more intimate and perfect for relaxed contemplation.

Amenities

In this area right on the shore is the Sanctuary of Truth about 0.6 miles (a kilometre) as the crow flies from the northern end of Wong Amat Beach. This is a major Pattaya attraction. There are many shops in the Naklua area on the alleys and on the main Naklua Road.

Alleys with numbers are streets between the beach and the main road Naklua Road which runs parallel to the shoreline. In this area between the main road and the territories of large hotel complexes along the beach there’s a Lotus’s Express several Family Mart outlets numerous cafes laundries pharmacies fruit stalls etc.

The Naklua area between the 16th and 22nd alleys is quite well-maintained with little rubbish and dust. If there’s a vacant lot it’s likely behind a neat fence and neatly overgrown. On the “second line” i.e. on the road behind the territories of large hotels and condos you’ll find Family Mart shops while the main road has 7-Eleven and others. Closer to the south there are many cafes and shops. Signs in Russian are common: pharmacies travel agencies souvenirs.

On the beach itself cafes and bars are concentrated to the left of the 18th alley beach exit. The Rim Talay Seafood restaurant is located right there. There’s also a beach volleyball court on the sand. Actually this area is not far from the centre and North Street so all the central attractions can also be attributed to Naklua.

Accommodation

Mainly expensive high-rise hotels and condos line the beach. Near the Rim Talay restaurant there’s also a small bungalow-style hotel. There are many houses for rent both long and short term in the part of Naklua district that’s closer to the fish market and behind the main road i.e. quite far from the sea.

How to find the beach

Along the beach in central Pattaya runs a road (Beach Road) which after the Amari Pattaya – Sha Extra Plus 5 hotel (if you’re driving north it will be on your right) turns away from the sea and leads to a roundabout with a fountain featuring dolphin figures in the centre. Several roads meet here.

To the right of Beach Road is Second Beach Road further anticlockwise is a road called North which leads to Sukhumvit. Straight ahead to the north runs Naklua Road which runs parallel to the sea and leads to the fish market after which the area becomes quite unexplored by tourists. Numbered alleys run from Naklua Road to the sea. They’re confusing and often end in dead ends. But in several places they lead to the beach.

The first (from the centre) descent to the beach in the form of a staircase with several flights is at the end of the 22nd alley. The 18th alley leads to the Rim Talay seafood restaurant and the Centara Pattaya Hotel 4 at the southern end of Wong Amat. Along the 16th alley you can walk to a narrow passage between two fences which leads directly to the beach – this is the northern exit. At all these exits you can park your transport – there’s not much space but you can find it especially for motorbikes.

I'm head over heels about travelling. I've been all over Thailand, both the south and the north. I've visited all the touristic cities, travelled there as a tourist for holidays and to escape the winter. I've been going there every year for 15 years now.
