Thongtakian Beach: The Beach with Four Names

Crystal Bay Yacht Club Beach Resort, Silver Beach Resort & Restaurant, and Crystal Bay Resort are the names of three hotels situated on the steep slopes around Thongtakian Bay.

Due to the different names used online, there is often confusion and unnecessary debates online. The correct name is “Thong Takian” with the emphasis on the last “a”.

Beach Overview

Thongtakian Beach is small and cozy, located in one of Samui’s hard-to-reach spots. The beach is about 300 meters long, stretching from the northwest to the southeast.

Both ends of Thongtakian Beach are protected by steep, round rocks, and access to the sea is only possible through the grounds of either Crystal Bay Yacht Club or Silver Beach Resort.

The sand at Thongtakian is light yellow, almost white, with coral fragments and shells. The main beach area has finer, cleaner sand, while towards the southeast, there are deposits of wave-worn coral. The beach is about 30 meters wide along its entire length.

The beach is kept impeccably clean, with clear boundaries between Crystal Bay Yacht Club and Silver Beach Resort. The staff of the latter smooth the sand every morning, showing great attention to the comfort of their guests.

Despite its isolated and seemingly inaccessible location from the ring road, tourists have long figured out the way here, frequently visiting and sharing their impressions of the neat, beautiful Thongtakian Beach. Even in the low season, the popularity of this place is evident with the Silver Beach hotel’s parking lot often full and many visitors on the beach.

Swimming

Thongtakian Beach’s depth is suitable for children as the gentle, sloping shore gradually descends over a hundred meters. About 50 steps from the shore, the depth reaches about one meter, which is chest-deep for an average adult. The sandy bottom and clear water provide a pleasant swimming experience.

A few meters from the shore, the feet may get tangled in seaweed, which is often washed ashore during high waves. High waves are relatively rare on Thongtakian Beach.

Sunbeds and Shade

The beach is separated from the hotel grounds by a low stone wall, off-limits to non-guests. All sunbeds and beach umbrellas are on private property and unavailable to visiting tourists. Therefore, visitors should bring their own beach mats.

There are several large, sprawling trees on Thongtakian Beach that can easily provide shade for about twenty people. While the rocks and boulders do not provide shade, there are trails up the slopes where you can climb to get a panoramic view of the entire beach.

Amenities

The area around Thongtakian Beach is off the busy part of Lamai. Directly around these three hotels, there are only a few commercial establishments and a couple of mini-marts.

Hotel guests enjoy full service, but those who want to experience the island’s life can drive towards Lamai. In about three minutes of leisurely driving, you’ll have access to everything Lamai has to offer, from grocery stores to the red-light district.

If you drive towards Chaweng, about 300 meters away, there is a good restaurant on the rocks called “The Cliff.” On the beach, there are several bamboo gazebos where you can get massages at slightly higher prices than usual.

Bars and restaurants are located on the hotel grounds, and there is no water sports equipment rental on Thongtakian. Nearby attractions within a ten-minute drive include:

  • Elephant Rock
  • Viewpoint on the pass between Lamai and Chaweng
  • Royal Samui Golf & Country Club

Accommodation

The local beaches are dominated by upscale hotels and villas. Thongtakian itself is occupied by the three aforementioned hotels, and within a 1.5 km radius, there is no affordable private rental housing.

Only hotels and villas are available. Driving around the area, looking at the luxurious buildings and fences, you’ll quickly conclude that this is a high-end neighborhood. If you want to book a hotel here in advance or find accommodation on other beaches, I have a selection of highly-rated hotels on Samui.

How to Find the Beach

The main landmark for finding the turn-off to one of the two hotels (Crystal Bay Yacht Club 3, Silver Beach Resort 3) is not to rush. For those unfamiliar with Thailand’s landscapes and scale, it can be challenging to navigate at high speeds.

The island is small, and everything is very close and appears suddenly. For those coming from Chaweng, the landmark is “The Cliff” restaurant, after which the sign for Crystal Bay Beach Resort 3 will appear on the same side. Pass it, and 30 meters later, you’ll find the parking lot for Silver Beach.

For those coming from Lamai, the landmark is “IT Complex Samui,” after which, 200 meters later, before starting the climb uphill, turn right onto the grounds of Crystal Bay Yacht Club. Then head towards the sea with your belongings and drinks.

The staff were unattentive to our table. The food was acceptable but nothing impressive. The only good thing was it was close to crystal beach. There wasn't a pool to use. Nothing to write home about.

The hotel is very good, with rooms of various types. Ours was very big. There is also a saltwater infinity pool next to the beach, one of the best in Samui. The food is good and there is a lot of variety of dishes. But there were several things we didn't like. When we arrived at the resort, around 8:00 p.m., it was dark, and there was no one at reception. It was the security guard who gave us the key and walked us to the room down a dark path. We had to go find a restaurant for dinner. The complex's restaurant and bar closes at 7 p.m., so from that time on you have to go to the ones in the neighboring hotels that are open.We were traveling with a 5-year-old girl and since she did not pay for a room, she was not entitled to breakfast (we paid for the glass of milk she had separately) or to towels. This is the first time it has happened to us. The manager already stressed to us several times that the girl had no right to stay "for free."When night fell, which is quite early, the hotel was plunged into darkness. We had to use a flashlight that we carried to be able to see the road well.We also didn't like that on the day of check out, from the moment we checked out, we could no longer use the pool. In all the hotels in Asia we have been to, they have let us stay, except in this one. It's a shame to be left with that bittersweet taste because it is a hotel and its surroundings are very beautiful.

My wife and I spent two days here. We arrived late and the friendly staff were accommodating and showed us to our room. The room was simple and clean with aircon. Both mornings we had the breakfast that came with our booking. Tasty breakfast to start the day, however the coffee is average. It was great having the option to relax on the beach or be in the clean, well maintained pool to cool off. The staff were friendly and accommodating, however when it came to dinner service they tend to shut around 7:00 which was fine for my wife and I but for others I could see been an issue. Over all I would recommend to friends and family.

The beach is nice but a bit small. Crowds of people. Nice view of the rocks.

The owner/manager (an elderly lady) ruined the last day of my stay over a missing cup from my room (which I had taken to the pool a few days prior, where it was cleaned up by the staff). I was so disappointed. Even when I replaced the cup with 4 new ones (cause apparently they have a cup shortage) I didn’t get an apology nor a thank you in any way or form. She just walked away. I stayed here for over 12 nights, always tipped the staff and spend most of my time here, so I didn’t understand this rigidity. I left the place with a bad taste in my mouth, which is not how I wanted to end my holiday. For the rest: price quality is in line. Basic rooms, bed is a bit hard, but lovely infinity pool and great massage parlor overlooking the ocean. The rest of the staff is very friendly and accommodating.

I use to go there regularly since 1996. Way back before the remodeling Lots of great memories, we use to have our dinner on the big flat rock 20 yards away from the dry sand walking in shallow water the service was Amazing Ms Wan and her family .Wondering who’s running the pace now I believe it’s still the same quality or better with the new design . Love that place

PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACH MASSAGE.I am a 27 year old female who left this resort just over a month ago and I now suffer from extreme back pain and having to see a chiropractor twice a week. I am even considering acupuncture now too as this pain is not getting any better due to the massage I had here. The tiny woman swung me onto her knees without warning and bent me into the crab position. I was screaming in pain but she just told me to relax. It may have been cheap at the time but I am now paying hundreds of pounds to correct this problem. I really hope it can be corrected because I have to live the rest of my life with the same spine.Sorry to taint this review with that ... the rooms were nice and clean, everything you could need. The food was nice and the staff were friendly. They tried to make me pay extra for using their sunbeds on the beach until I asked the right person why I could not as I was a paying guest. I was then allowed to use the sunbed but every other member of staff was telling me I had to pay.Sorry to be a Karen, just life has got hard since being back having to make adjustments to my life due to the pain! ...

Beach is beautiful, pool is lovely but rooms are not so good. Most are right on a busy street and noise is pretty bad. Rooms are super basic. Not very comfortable. One step up from a hostel. The price is good though and there are 3 beachfront rooms that are higher end. No one there after 9 if you need assistance.
